G 191. From Asylum to Artistry: Tariq Tarey’s Dedication to Elevating Refugee Stories
This week, I’m excited to have Tariq Tarey join me on the podcast. Tariq Tarey is currently the Director of Refugee Social Services at Jewish Family Services in Columbus, Ohio. He serves on Ohio’s New African Immigrants Commission and the Franklin County Board of Commissioner’s New American Advisory Council.
Tariq is also a documentary photographer, skilled in both still photography and filmmaking. Tariq’s work highlights the stories of refugee populations in Central Ohio with his work receiving several honors including a permanent collection on display at the Columbus Museum of Art.
Tariq shares the story of his immigration to the United States, the impact on his family and the cultural nuances in which he had to adapt. Tariq’s shares how his own journey inspired him to pursue photography and filmmaking, a power tool he uses to tell the stories of other refugees so their stories can be archived for future generations. I’m grateful to Tariq for sharing his story and I hope you enjoy our conversation.
